Being Taiwanese in USA - exploring the attributes - a place for continuous discussion

This is an attempt to collect and organize the process of the exploration initiated by Ms. Ruyi Lin through the volunteer companionship under the Gardeners of Hope Foundation, a new not-for-profit organization, being started and to be established in St. Louis, Mo., USA. The idea was triggered by a mid-night conversation through facebook messenger about the dancing group of Taiwanese and the opportunity to learn kungfu. 8:38 2018-6-8

Chinese功夫
In general, kung fu/kungfu or gung fu/gongfu (/ˌkʌŋˈf/ (About this sound listen) or /ˌkʊŋˈf/功夫Pinyingōngfu) refers to the Chinese martial arts, also called wushu and quanfa. In China, it refers to any study, learning, or practice that requires patience, energy, and time to complete. In its original meaning, kung fu can refer to any discipline or skill achieved through hard work and practice, not necessarily martial arts. The Chinese literal equivalent of "Chinese martial art" would be 中国武术 zhōngguó wǔshù.[1]
There are many forms of kung fu, namely Shaolin Kung FuWing ChunTai chi, etc. and are practiced all over the world. Each form of kung fu has its own principles and techniques. It is only in the late twentieth century, that this term was used in relation to Chinese martial arts by the Chinese community.[2] The Oxford English Dictionary defines the term "kung-fu" as "a primarily unarmed Chinese martial art resembling karate."[3] This illustrates how the meaning of this term has been changed in English. The origin of this change can be attributed to the misunderstanding or mistranslation of the term through movie subtitles or dubbing.[2]

功夫,又稱武功,不僅是搏擊術和單純的拳腳運動,現在,「功夫」有了更深刻的內涵:它講究的不再僅僅是武藝高強,而是剛柔並濟、內外兼修,即習武之人被要求擁有高尚的品德或情操。[1]功夫有兩種外在表現形式,一種是套路演練形式,另一種是格鬥對抗形式,一般上講的功夫是實用性格鬥對抗形式。
「功夫」一詞最早被廣泛認識的是在二十世紀六十七十年代,由李小龍開始把這兩個字發揚光大;因李氏對武術界的貢獻和影響力,所以「Kung Fu」一詞被寫入英文字典內。[註 1]

  1. Hello Everyone, I am interested in connecting to my cultural heritage and ancestors by studying Taiwanese dance and kung fu. I like moving the body as meditation. Also, I have had many discussions with friends about how your body is genetically adapted to be good at things your ancestors have been doing for hundreds of years. For example, when I studied ballet/modern/jazz dance I discovered that no matter how much I loved it, I could not do it without injuring myself. However when I do Asian arts like Tai-Chi, Chi-gong and Kung fu my body naturally goes to the positions with no pain. Thanks to Tony for starting this blog. You may call me Ruyi, Sabrina, Rina, or Sabby.

  2. Nice beginning....
    Out of many factors in culture, everyone has different kinds of sensitivity. Ruyi happens to select body gesture and movement. I happen to be more sensitive in sound and the sound-related issues.

    I used to limit myself to what interested me and ignore the others when I was young, like in high school and before that.

    As I grew older and tasted other aspects of life, I learned that the non-interesting stuffs were affecting me seriously and I should not ignore them. This helps to develop my other kinds of approaches and respond positively to those un-interesting to me. Eventually, after I got into job market I learned that I need to excel beyond my interest, interests, and ability. In a simply way, I learn to like and respond positively toward what I did not like and what I did not know.

    This has become my foundation for providing services, my help, and helping one another on unfamiliar subject and make it a unique and essential part of the work of the Gardeners of Hope.

    Now, my initial curiosity includes the elements and the factors in body gesture and movements.

    I am curious about the body movements that are the foundation of the Taiwanesism. (Is there such word as Taiwanesism? I guess it means "the attributes and the reasons of being Taiwanese")

    Then, there are taboo-level question of "what is Taiwanese" and "why Taiwanese". Without thinking about these I am not able to deal with the Taiwanese styles and the Taiwanese ways of doing things, including holding and changing body gestures.

  3. Just like all the other kinds of arts, dancing and kûn-thâu (Romanized Taiwanese literally means fist-head, meaning the fists for fighting) involve at least three levels of functions that affect how to do it.

    Direct usage and application of the core activities; psychological and sociological effects; personal gratification and economic effects.

  6. Every culture has both good elements and bad ones. The elements of culture are actually changing over time, spontaneously by virtue of natural courses or planned changes.

    Some people make great contribution to their culture by pushing forward with new insights, new findings, new efforts.

      Every culture has both good elements and bad ones. The elements of culture are actually changing over time, spontaneously by virtue of natural courses or planned changes. 每個文化都有好的跟不好的元素。實際上文化的元素一直隨著時間自然演進或是經由刻意計畫而改變。Múi chi̍t-chióng bǔn-hòa lóng ū hó-ê kap bô-hó-ê goân-sò͘.
