Most of you may not see him. However, you must hear lots of his successful stories. Dr. Y. David Ma (DaMa), a legend among Washington University graduate students. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from Developmental Biology Program, Department of Pathology and Immunology, Washington University School of Medicine in 2009. During his studies at Washington University, he served as President of Washington University in St. Louis Taiwanese Graduate Student Association (TGSA) https://www.facebook.com/groups/WUSTLTGSA/ He is the founder of the Bio Entrepreneurship Core (BEC) https://sites.wustl.edu/wubec/about-us/ at Washington University and the recipient of the 2007 Kauffman Fellowship Pathway in Life Sciences Entrepreneurship. He went back to Taiwan after graduated from WU in 2009. After worked as a Manager, Biotechnology Incubation Center at Academia Sinica, Taiwan (1 year 11 months) and served as Director, Business Development at Medigen Biotechnology Corporation (1 year 11 months). New ways for reviving TAA-STL 復興「新路意台灣同鄉會」的新路

Chia sī siu-chi̍p iú-koan Sin-lō͘-ì ho̍k-heng Tâi-oân Tông-Hiong-Hōe ê sin hong-hoat ê só͘-chāi. 這是「復興新路意台灣同鄉會」的新方法的收集站。This is a repository of new ways for reviving Taiwanese Association of America in St. Louis.

It started on July 29, 2018, after some brief discussion with James and Ruby Chan at TPCSTL after lunch. 這個新的努力是在2018年7月29日在新路意台灣人長老教會午餐後,與詹前昱楊美鳳夫婦聊天後開始的。This new effort started after some chatting with James and Ruby Chan at the Taiwanese Presbyterian Church of Greater St. Louis, after agape lunch, on July 29, 2018.

ABSTRACT
The long-term goal of my laboratory is to understand the underlying causes of heart disease, which is one of the leading causes of death for both adults and children, and to improve treatment methods and outcomes for this debilitating condition. Currently we are focusing on understanding the molecular mechanisms of coronary and cardiac lymphatic vessel formation during zebrafish heart development and regeneration. Furthermore, we will determine how these vessels support myocardial growth and regeneration and fibrotic scar resolution. My interest in heart diseases stems from my Ph.D. thesis research under the mentorship of Dr. Eric Olson at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Eric’s passion for science and high levels of excellence inspired me to continue to pursue research in cardiovascular diseases and to strive for excellence in research. I decided to change a model organism and joined Dr. Mark Keating’s laboratory at Children’s Hospital of Boston and Harvard Medical School as a postdoctoral fellow, since I was fascinated by the remarkable ability of zebrafish to regenerate tissues and organs, including fins and hearts. I was very fortunate to find my faculty position at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, University of Southern California. I will be happy to share my experiences regarding my career path.

Ministry through Churchseeing 觀光宣教 - the sanctuary 禮拜廳

This photo as a background image on a computer screen is amazingly attractive and inspiring. It has more impact as a screen saver. One of the key points for church-seeing at our church building is the sanctuary. What can we say about this particular sanctuary? This is the first attempt. No matter what others say about the sanctuary, what is the sanctuary and church building in our church and in our minds?

Our worship hall is designed not for running around nor making noise. Every scene visible inside our sanctuary actually helps viewers calm down, be inspired and feeling hopeful.

Can we tell the “what and how” we are supposed to see in this sanctuary? This is one of the locations we make a special effort to visit every Sunday. What have we seen when we look at these special windows? 

When there is no worship service nor other session-authorized activities going on in the sanctuary what is the sanctuary for and what are we supposed to face and handle that vacant space?

How could we make everyone aware of this and work together for the proper usage of that space? 

First of all, the sanctuary, with the see-through glasses, is a huge and continuously changing piece of the picture, or a piece of art in multiple media, visible from many places in and around the building, showing and reminding us what we believe, follow, and trying to be. Maintaining the quality of the visual effect is participating in discerning and distributing our faith and theology.

Then when the lights are off without any activity, it becomes a quiet place of meditation for those who want to concentrate spiritually without the interference of daily secular load. Traditionally, most of the worship places would be open all day long to allow people, without qualification, to enter and stay for their spiritual needs. This is one of the meanings of being a sanctuary. Every sanctuary should encourage everybody to try the quiet moments and environment before leaving the church building and go somewhere else for every visit to the church building. For this traditional and unique function, we encourage everyone, including the children, to work together in maximizing the quietness and peace in the sanctuary. Staying or walking in a quiet and peaceful sanctuary might let people feel close to God and himself or herself. (This is an edition separated and adjusted on 2019/5/6)

我們的禮拜廳本來就不是設計給人奔跑、喧嘩的。這個景象的確會幫助觀察者沈靜心思,得到啟發、而覺得有望。

講得出我們要怎麼「看」這個禮拜廳嗎?這是我們每主日刻意造訪的景點之一。每當我們看到這些特殊的窗子時我們到底看到什麼?當禮拜廳裏面沒有任何禮拜儀式或其他經由小會認可的活動在進行時,那個禮拜廳的功能是什麼,我們應該如何面對並處理那個空間呢?我們能夠如何使每個人都感受到這些思考並且協力使這個空間發揮適當的功用呢?

首先,禮拜廳,配著大片透明玻璃,就是一幅巨大,又不斷變換的圖像,或說是一大片多媒體藝術品,從整個建築裡外許多地方都看得到,隨時在展現並且提醒我們的所相信、跟隨、努力達成的信仰。維護這個視覺藝術的品質就是在參與「識別並推廣我們的信仰與神學」的活動。

再者,禮拜廳沒有活動,沒有燈光時,就成為一個想要擺脫一切日常俗事的牽掛,能夠專心默想、私禱的空間。大部分的禮拜廳一向都是天天整天開門讓任何人為各自的靈修所需而自由進出、逗留。這是一種「庇護所」的概念。禮拜廳理當鼓勵每個人都在每次使用教會建築後,離開、轉移到別地方之前,嘗試運用那特有的安靜時刻與環境。

為了發揮這樣的特殊傳統功能,我們希望每個人,包括孩童,協力來使這個安靜、平靜的空間發揮最大的效益。在那安靜、平和的禮拜廳裡面逗留或走動都可能使人覺得與上帝跟自己內心比較接近。(這是在 2019/5/6 分割並調正的版本)

First of all, the sanctuary, with the see-through glasses, is a huge and continuously changing piece of piciture, or a piece of art in multiple media, visible from many places in and around the building, showing and reminding us what we believe, follow, and trying to be. Maintaining the quality of the visual effect is participating in descerning and distributing the our faith and theology. 首先,禮拜廳,配著大片透明玻璃,就是一幅巨大,又不斷變換的圖像,或說是一大片多媒體藝術品,從整個建築裡外許多地方都看得到,隨時在展現並且提醒我們的所相信、跟隨、努力達成的信仰。維護這個視覺藝術的品質就是在參與「識別並推廣我們的信仰與神學」的活動。Tāi-seng, chit ê lé-pài thiaⁿ, phòe hap tōa-phì ê thang-kng po-lê, chiū-sī chi̍t-pa̍k chiok-tōa koh put-toān  piàn-hòa ê tô͘, á-sī kóng sī chi̍t-tōa phì ê to-mûi-thé gē-su̍t-phín, sī túi chi̍t-ê kiàn-tio̍k bu̍t chin-chē sò͘-chāi lóng khòaⁿ ē tio̍h ê, koh sī sûi-sî tehhián-hiān koh thê-séng lán só͘ siong-sìn, kun-tòe, ài beh kiâⁿ chhut-lâi ê sìn-gión. Ûi-hō͘ chit-ê sī-kak gē-su̍t ê phín-chit chiū-sī teh chham-ú “jīn-chhut koh thui-kóng lán ê sìn-gióng kap sîn-ha̍k” ê oa̍h-tāng.

Then when the lights are off without any activity, it becomes a quite place of meditation for those who want to concentrate spiritually without the interference of daily secular load. Traditionally, most of the worship places would be open all day long to allow people, without qualification, to enter and stay for their spiritual needs. This is one of the meaning of being a sanctuary. Every sanctuary should encourage everybody to try the quiet moments and environment before leaving the church building and go somewhere else for every visit to the church building. For this traditional and unique function we encourage everyone, including the children, to work together in maximizing the quietness and peace in the sanctuary. 再者,禮拜廳沒有活動,沒有燈光時,就成為一個想要擺脫一切日常俗事的牽掛,能夠專心默想、私禱的空間。大部分的禮拜廳一向都是天天整天開門讓任何人為各自的靈修所需而自由進出、逗留。這是一種「庇護所」的概念。禮拜廳理當鼓勵每個人都在每次使用教會建築後,離開、轉移到別地方之前,嘗試運用那特有的安靜時刻與環境。為了發揮這樣的特殊傳統功能,我們希望每個人,包括孩童,協力來使這個安靜、平靜的空間發揮最大的效益。Koh-lâi, Pài-tn̂g thiaⁿ lāi-bīn bô oa̍h-tāng, tiān-hóe bô kng ê sî, i chiū chiâⁿ-chò chi̍t-ê “siūⁿ-beh pàng-hē ji̍t-siông sio̍k-sū ê tāng-tàⁿ” ê lâng ē-tàng choan-simbe̍k-sióng, tiām-tiām kî-tó ê khong-kan. Tāi pō͘-hūn ê lé-pài thiaⁿ it-hiòng lóng-sī ta̍k-ji̍t kui-ji̍t lóng khui-mn̂g hō͘ jīm-hô lâng ūi-tio̍h ka-kī lêng-siu ê su-iàu chū-iû chhut-ji̍p á-sī ltī lāi-bīn lâu khah-kú. Che sī chi̍t-chióng “pì-hō͘ só͘” ê khài-liām. Lé-pài thiaⁿ pún-lâi tō eng-kai kó͘-lē múi chi̍t-ê lâng tī ta̍k-pái sú-iōng kàu-hōe kiàn-tio̍k but ê-sî, tī beh lî-khui choán khì pa̍t só͘-chāi í-chêng chhì ēng hit-ê an-chēng koh pêng-hô ê khong-kan kap sî-khek. Ūi-tio̍h hoat-hui chit-khoán ê te̍k-sû thoân-thóng kong-lêng, lán hi-bāng múi chi̍t-ê lâng, pau-khoat gín-á, hia̍p-le̍k lâi hō͘ chit-ê an-chēng, pêng-chēng ê khong-kan hoat-hui chòe-tōa ê hāu-ek.

Staying or walking in the quiet and peaceful sanctuary might let people feel close to God and himself or herself. 在那安靜、平和的禮拜廳裡面逗留或走動都可能使人覺得與上帝跟自己內心比較接近。Tī hit-ê an-chēng, pêng-hô ê lé-pài thiaⁿ lāi-bīn tiām-tiām chē á-sī kiâⁿ-lâi-kiâⁿ-khì lóng ū khó-lêng hō͘ lâng kám-kak tio̍h kap Siōng-chú, kap ka-kī khah chiap-kīn.

During our first experiment of visitors' guide we identified several points of viewing: 在我們們的第一次導覽實驗裡我們找到幾個景點: 
1. our vision: looking at the uncultivated / unused land 我們的願景: 還沒有看發/使用的土地
2. our missions: looking at our familiar scenes: the trees, the roof, the gates, the fellowship halls and the meanings behind them. 我們的使命:那些熟悉的景象--包括樹木、屋頂、門、交誼廳以及怎藏在景觀背後的特殊意義
3. the sanctuary: when nobody is in there and the light went off what could we see? 禮拜廳:當沒有人在裡,燈沒有開的時候,會看到什麼?
4. the special facilities that no other churches has. 其他禮拜堂沒有的特殊設施或設備。

How would you talk about these to your visitors of our church building? 面對訪客,你可能會怎麼說明這些?
