紀元訓牧師 digested by Su-mei Wu

(A life lived is not measured in how many positions we've held, but in how many people we've helped)。

First guided tour at STLTPC

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDHhQZR-UQU&list=PLgcznScNc5egLWhKVG2D8wRuS9tY6PTo6
01 For the first time, trying to introduce the church and the church building to a small group of visitors, from the 223th General Assembly of PCUSA in St. Louis. This is an experiment that expores the situations, the senarios, and the potential responses in a churchseeing and starts a baseline for continuous improvements. Che sī ti̍t-ê teh thàm-thó chham-koan kàu-hōe ê sî khó-lêng chhut-hiān ê chêng-kéng, chōng-thāi, kap hoán-èng, ê si̍t-giām. We will make new videos with caption, multiple languages, avoiding background noise, etc. Goán ū siūⁿ-beh koh-chài têng phah-phìⁿ, chhái-iōng jī-bō͘, to-chióng gú-giân, kiám-chió cha̍p-im, téng-téng.

This tour starts from the Fellowship Hall which is designed for people to meet and be connected, before and after worshiping in the sanctuary / worship hall. Chit-ê chham-koan ê hêng-thêng tùi kau-gî thiaⁿ chhut-hoat. We hope that nobody feels lonely and neglected in this hall where the scene of the sanctuary as a giant picture, reminding the source of inspiration, is always visible as a background. Tng-bīn saⁿ-kìⁿ sī chit-ê kau-gî thiaⁿ ê koan-kiàn-jī. 02 a Presbyterian tree
This is a special tree, or two, in the front/side yard of the church property illuminating one of the basic principles of Presbyterianism -- let people of different types and levels grow and live together.

03 Entrance
This unconventional entrance of a church building reverses the tradition of church building with theology from Jesus. Traditionally a church building has a small space between the entrance and the woship hall, the sanctuary. That means that the visitors are expected to enter the worship place immediately, assuming that everybody goest to a church building for worshiping God. The entrance of the TPCSTL lead the visitors to the largest open space of the building, the fellowship hall, where they have chances to turn to many other options than participating in a worship service or a quiet meditation alone in the sanctuary. This is designed based on the following words from the Sripture. Matthew 5: …23 Therefore if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. 25 Reconcile quickly with your adversary, while you are still on the way to court. Otherwise he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.…

04 stained glass in the fellowship hall
Stained glasses that won't distract while adding the visual effect in the sanctuary. The stained glassed windows that multiply throughout the church building.

05 in the sactuary (worship hall)
The off-hour of the sanctuary is great for meditation.

06 legacy of how we handle the pastor

We take a special need of the pastor very seriously and reflect it in the hardware leaving a legacy.

Our first pastor spent a lot time working at the church building. He sweats frequently and needs to show and change clothing frequently, especially when he needs to meet others at the church or leaving fromt eh church site. We include a shower room for him and for other special occasions where showering is necessary.

We include a restroom right there in the pastor's office to make it easy for the pastor, especially at the moment right before the preaching. This is very unusual everywhere.

In the fellowship hall, there is a special room for collection the sanitary related items. On each side of the door, there is a line showing that the drywall is different from the ordinary wall. That is a monument of how we treat the opinions of two extremes. Some people want to build a movable partition to make part of the fellowship hall an extension of the sanctuary while others believe that the whole fellowship is part of the sanctuary when there is activity going on in the sanctuary. We ended up reserving the room for storing the movable partition with the drywall easily changed for the special remodeling, without actually building the partition. This is a testimony of Presbyterianism at work.

ABSTRACT
The long-term goal of my laboratory is to understand the underlying causes of heart disease, which is one of the leading causes of death for both adults and children, and to improve treatment methods and outcomes for this debilitating condition. Currently we are focusing on understanding the molecular mechanisms of coronary and cardiac lymphatic vessel formation during zebrafish heart development and regeneration. Furthermore, we will determine how these vessels support myocardial growth and regeneration and fibrotic scar resolution. My interest in heart diseases stems from my Ph.D. thesis research under the mentorship of Dr. Eric Olson at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Eric’s passion for science and high levels of excellence inspired me to continue to pursue research in cardiovascular diseases and to strive for excellence in research. I decided to change a model organism and joined Dr. Mark Keating’s laboratory at Children’s Hospital of Boston and Harvard Medical School as a postdoctoral fellow, since I was fascinated by the remarkable ability of zebrafish to regenerate tissues and organs, including fins and hearts. I was very fortunate to find my faculty position at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, University of Southern California. I will be happy to share my experiences regarding my career path.
Thanks Dr. Paul Huang 黃立豪 invited seminar speaker and wrote seminar announcement.

Ministry through Churchseeing 觀光宣教 - the sanctuary 禮拜廳

This photo as a background image on a computer screen is amazingly attractive and inspiring. It has more impact as a screen saver. One of the key points for church-seeing at our church building is the sanctuary. What can we say about this particular sanctuary? This is the first attempt. No matter what others say about the sanctuary, what is the sanctuary and church building in our church and in our minds?

Our worship hall is designed not for running around nor making noise. Every scene visible inside our sanctuary actually helps viewers calm down, be inspired and feeling hopeful.

Can we tell the “what and how” we are supposed to see in this sanctuary? This is one of the locations we make a special effort to visit every Sunday. What have we seen when we look at these special windows?

When there is no worship service nor other session-authorized activities going on in the sanctuary what is the sanctuary for and what are we supposed to face and handle that vacant space?

How could we make everyone aware of this and work together for the proper usage of that space?

First of all, the sanctuary, with the see-through glasses, is a huge and continuously changing piece of the picture, or a piece of art in multiple media, visible from many places in and around the building, showing and reminding us what we believe, follow, and trying to be. Maintaining the quality of the visual effect is participating in discerning and distributing our faith and theology.

Then when the lights are off without any activity, it becomes a quiet place of meditation for those who want to concentrate spiritually without the interference of daily secular load. Traditionally, most of the worship places would be open all day long to allow people, without qualification, to enter and stay for their spiritual needs. This is one of the meanings of being a sanctuary. Every sanctuary should encourage everybody to try the quiet moments and environment before leaving the church building and go somewhere else for every visit to the church building. For this traditional and unique function, we encourage everyone, including the children, to work together in maximizing the quietness and peace in the sanctuary. Staying or walking in a quiet and peaceful sanctuary might let people feel close to God and himself or herself. (This is an edition separated and adjusted on 2019/5/6)

One of the key points for churchseeing at our church building is the sanctuary. What can we say about this particular sanctuary? This is the first attempt. Chham-koan lán ê lé-pài tn̂g ê-sî tiōng-iàu ê kéng-tiám chi it sī lé-pài thiaⁿ. Lán ē-tàng án-chóaⁿ káng-kái nē? No matter what others say about sanctuary, what is the sanctuary and church building in our church and in our minds? Put-koán pa̍t-lâng án-chóaⁿ kóng, tī lán ê lé-pài-tn̂g kap lán sim-ba̍k tiong ê lé-pài thiaⁿ, á-sī kóng pì-hō͘ só͘, sī sím-mi̍h?

Our worship hall is designed not for running around nor making noise. Every scenes visable inside our sanctuary actually helps viewers calm down, be inspired and feeling hopeful. Can we tell the “what and how” we are supposed to see in this sanctuary? This is one of the locations we make special effort to visit every Sunday. What have we seen when we look at these special windows? When there is no worship service nor other session-authorized activities going on in the sanctuary what is the sanctuary for and what are we supposed to face and handle that vacant space? How could we make everyone aware of this and work together for the proper usage of that space? Tng lé-pài-thiaⁿ lāi-bīn bô jīm-hô lé-pài gî-sek á-sī kî-tha siū-tio̍h sió-hōe jīn-khó ê oa̍h-tāng teh chìn-hêng ê sî, hit ê lé-pài thiaⁿ ê kong-lêng tàu-tí sī sím-mi̍h, lán eng-kai án-chóaⁿ biān-tùi koh chhú-lí hit ê khong-kan nè? First of all, the sanctuary, with the see-through glasses, is a huge and continuously changing piece of piciture, or a piece of art in multiple media, visible from many places in and around the building, showing and reminding us what we believe, follow, and trying to be. Maintaining the quality of the visual effect is participating in descerning and distributing the our faith and theology. Tāi-seng, chit ê lé-pài thiaⁿ, phòe hap tōa-phì ê thang-kng po-lê, chiū-sī chi̍t-pa̍k chiok-tōa koh put-toān  piàn-hòa ê tô͘, á-sī kóng sī chi̍t-tōa phì ê to-mûi-thé gē-su̍t-phín, sī túi chi̍t-ê kiàn-tio̍k bu̍t chin-chē sò͘-chāi lóng khòaⁿ ē tio̍h ê, koh sī sûi-sî tehhián-hiān koh thê-séng lán só͘ siong-sìn, kun-tòe, ài beh kiâⁿ chhut-lâi ê sìn-gión. Then when the lights are off without any activity, it becomes a quite place of meditation for those who want to concentrate spiritually without the interference of daily secular load. Traditionally, most of the worship places would be open all day long to allow people, without qualification, to enter and stay for their spiritual needs. This is one of the meaning of being a sanctuary. Every sanctuary should encourage everybody to try the quiet moments and environment before leaving the church building and go somewhere else for every visit to the church building. For this traditional and unique function we encourage everyone, including the children, to work together in maximizing the quietness and peace in the sanctuary. Koh-lâi, Pài-tn̂g thiaⁿ lāi-bīn bô oa̍h-tāng, tiān-hóe bô kng ê sî, i chiū chiâⁿ-chò chi̍t-ê “siūⁿ-beh pàng-hē ji̍t-siông sio̍k-sū ê tāng-tàⁿ” ê lâng ē-tàng choan-simbe̍k-sióng, tiām-tiām kî-tó ê khong-kan. During our first experiment of visitors' guide we identified several points of viewing:
1. our vision: looking at the uncultivated / unused land
2. our missions: looking at our familiar scenes: the trees, the roof, the gates, the fellowship halls and the meanings behind them.
3. the sanctuary: when nobody is in there and the light went off what could we see?
4. the special facilities that no other churches has.

How would you talk about these to your visitors of our church building?
