What is stem cell? Have you heard stem cell treatments/therapy?

Dear friends,

We would like to invite you to attend the special event co-hosted by NATWA-STL (North America Taiwanese Women's Association in St. Louis 北美洲臺灣婦女會聖路易分會) and TSA-STL (Taiwanese Scholar Association in St. Louis 聖路易台灣學者協會) on August 19^th(Saturday).

 

The stem cell science is a promising area of research. With many breakthroughs in this field, how many of these advance stem cell technology can be applied to the stem cell treatment/therapy?  

• Does stem cell treatments have any side effects? 
• Do you believe stem cell cosmetic surgery/treatment?
• Why there are still so many controversial issues in this field? 

Mr. Lai, Chin-Wen 賴勁文, a graduate student in immunology program, Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, who will share his researches in the stem cell applications via non-academic language to explore with you on this exciting, mystery and controversial science.

 

The registration starts at 5:30 pm and 賴勁文 will present at 5:45 pm then followed by a dinner reception. The reception includes drinks, fruits, and many delicious dishes such as 滷肉, 滷蛋, 雪裡紅炒豆乾, 涼拌黃瓜, 台灣炒米粉 (素), 烤鴨, 椒鹽排骨 等等.

About  Lai, Chin-Wen 賴勁文

25 歲以前，宜蘭，屏東，台北就是他的世界，25 歲飛離台灣以後，彷彿沒了枷鎖，隨興在 Google Maps上一點，都是亟欲探索的新世界。

雖然為自然生態攝影記錄癡狂，但又背負想改變現有體制的夢，打算用科學數據打下自己未來為社會發聲的能量，現在仍花費大半時間在實驗室尋找實現願望的機會。

研究範圍一直跳不出肚子，從肝臟到大小腸，目前著重在免疫系統如何修復受傷的器官，同時也探討幹細胞在這一個過程扮演的角色。

他是我們今天的講者賴勁文，也是賴阿西，憑著阿西的傻勁在這個圈子努力，等待不再是無路用的那一天來臨。

Stem cell science and applications

今天探討的主題：幹細胞，分別會針對（１）幹細胞的定義，（２） 臨床應用，（３）實際案例討論，和大家分享講者所認識的幹細胞。

幹細胞的研究迄今已有五十多個年頭，對這類細胞的了解越多， 對於他們的應用也越期待。

目前臨床和市面上廣泛聽到幹細胞治療， 究竟他的成功率有多高，這類標題的可信度有多少， 還有背後隱藏著的道德倫理疑慮， 我們都希望不是人云亦云的消費者或聽眾， 

這次講者會與大家分享幹細胞的背景知識，介紹目前有的臨床應用， 些許法規以及幾則有趣的案例，看大家對此有何看法。 

不只讓各位看到科學家的研究成果，未來當各位碰到相關議題， 也能帶著一些相關知識，更深度剖析背後的真實性。
